Parade Script | The Mormon Battalion was a group of Mormon volunteers who were called up and served during the Mexican American War of 1846-1848. As part of a vision for the United States known as Manifest Destiny, President Polk authorized the enlistment of 500 members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, known as Mormons, to join the Army of the West, under the command of General Stephen Watts Kearny. Leaving on a hot day in July of 1846, the 500 men of the battalion, accompanied with about 30 women, many of them serving as laundresses for the Army, never saw any combat, but did they did forge a wagon road that would later serve as a passageway for the Butterfield Stage. They dug wells, built forts, and became friends with the Californios in Southern Californio. Joining General Kearney’s forces, they helped establish order and enabled General Kearney to establish his role as military governor of California. Marching over 2,000 miles in support of the Army of the West, the march of the Mormon battalion is considered one of the longest military marches in American history. |
